First time reader, first time poster, first time organiser! Great start..

I’m planning on heading to Lake Tennyson (just north of Hanmer Springs) and open to others coming along (especially if you’ve done this before).

Lake Tennyson

Easy day trip leaving from Christchurch, head all the way along to the end and then turn back. Nothing too huge (I’m running road tyres and guessing it’s mostly metal roads), but some nice things to see. Stop at the Lake for lunch, then stopping by Hanmer Springs on the way home for a dip.

Meet at the Peg Tavern on the northern end of Belfast for a 9am departure. ‘Tickets’/spaces are per car, not peeps. And pack a lunch!

Thanks!
Kit

  1. Back in my day you certainly couldn’t do the Rainbow on road tyres! Seems like we’ve turned into a bunch of pussies 😀

Actually it sounds like a good idea Kit, thanks for putting it up. If I can persuade the kid(s) I might tag along.

  2. Hi Kit.

From Hanmer to Lake Tennyson is a very easy drive. You will have no problems with it. For a bit more fun try the Maling pass just before you get to the Lake Tennyson turn off. We did the Rainbow Road last December and went down Maling Pass to the river. It would probably take an extra hour and a half to two hours return. There is a locked gate, see below for the DOC information site.

Just an aside the Rainbow Road is only open from 26 December to Easter Monday. We drove this with AT tires last December and it was fantastic, highly recommended.

    Enjoy your trip.

    1. Thanks for the info! Yeah, I had intended to register for the Maling Pass track, heard it’s a bit of fun! Hence needing car info for DoC 🙂
I’ll try to get some good pics and post up what it’s like at the moment.

  3. Well done Kit! Just some reassurance that road tyres will be fine, and you could get all the way through to St Arnaud like that if you wanted – the Rainbow isn’t too difficult. We ran a trip through there a couple of eyears ago. Yuo have to pay for station access, somewhere towards the St Arnaud end, in cash, but it’s not a biggie if you wanted to make an even bigger day of it!
